Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind-Sound & Image Relationship Blog

In the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel played by Jim Carrey is trying to erase from his memory his ex-girlfriend, Clementine played by Kate Winslet. In this particular scene Joel is visiting Clementine at a book store or library, since Joel is reliving or revisiting a memory the filmmakers provide the viewer different camera angles to make them feel as if they were actually in the book store/library with the two actors. The film was edited in a continuity form following the 180 degree rule because the viewer can always tell the position of the actor and it doesn't change from shot to shot allowing the shots to flow naturally. The lighting in this scene is low key to make it more natural or normal and the colors can be set to be warm. The sound is diegetic at first with the sounds of books beings stored, pages being turned and their conversation. The amplitude is increased for their voices so that you can hear them clearer. As the music, which is nondiegetic starts to fade in their voices start to fade out a little. The music is this scene is very mellow and soft, which allows you to see the emotions Joel is feeling at the moment.

Title: Thank You for (not) Smoking

Nick, a professor at Hunter College, prepares to erase the chalkboard and pack up his things after his class ends, and his students have already left.

After putting on his jacket, Nick reaches for his phone to check the time. Realizing time is ticking, he power walks towards the door.

Nick exits the classroom and paces towards the escalator.

(sounds of the escalator)

Nick tries his best to dodge fellow escalator riders.

Nick becomes exasperated as he runs towards the exit.

(sounds of the 6 train nearby)

In front of the west building, Nick runs towards the camera and lights his cigarette. A look of contentment on his face is shown as he releases the first puff of smoke.

(sounds of the lighter as Nick tries to light his cigarette)

Realizing the no smoking sign above his head, Nick shrugs it off and continues to smoke.

The Sounds of the City

For the second blog I took notes while waiting at the same bus stop at different times during the day to go to a doctor's appointment. It was a rainy day so you can hear as the wheels of the cars hits the pavement.

The first time I found myself at the bus stop it was around 9:30-9:45 AM. The morning traffic had died off and cars would move easily through the streets. Like I mentioned above being that it was raining you can hear the wheels of the vehicles hit the pavement. I found that sound to be soothing.
About every two to three minutes the train would pass and since it is overground you would actually hear the rough sounds it makes.

The second time I found myself at the same bus stop it was around 3:00 PM on the same day. It was not raining at the time but the grounds were still wet so you can still hear the sounds of the wheels hit the pavement. You can say that this sound served as background noise throughout the day because it was constant. Since it was a bit later in the day there was a lot more traffic in the streets. You can hear the traffic with all the honking. What added more roughness to the afternoon was the kids getting out of school. There is a high school near by and as they walked to the bus stop and train station you can hear them talking loudly. This can be said to serve as sound signals. The screaming voices, the laughters of the kids serve as a sound signal because it attracts attention. All these sounds can be said to be soundmarks of NYC. I feel that this is a sound mark for all of New York City. I doubt that any part in the suburbs or less transited areas would have all these sounds.

First Generation Art Lover or Something Like That- Artist Statement

My name is Dariaura, although I advice everyone to call me Dari because my name can be a mouthful. I am a first generation American with a Dominican background. Apart from that I consider myself to be a "first generation art lover". Growing up my mother never influenced us (my brother and I) with a passion for any type of art and as I was searching for myself I found this love for all types of art, i.e. music, literature, films, paintings.

If I were to call myself an artist it would be due to the fact of how much I love photography. I am obsessed with capturing the moment, specially sunsets. If I can travel the world just taking pictures of sunsets I would be more than happy. My favorite type of art is street art and mixed media. I love how artists can express themselves on murals and through graffiti. Last year I spent all of October following the art of Bansky all throughout NYC when he hosted his "The Street is in Play" exhibition and it was an amazing experience. Recently I traveled to Miami and made it a point to visit the Wynwood area to see all the wall murals artists have done. Below is a picture I took of Brazilian artist Kobra's wall.

After I graduate from Hunter I would like to work in a creative environment either in the art world in galleries or with artists or in advertisements and marketing. Although I don't consider myself creative I like to revolve myself around creative people.
